Call for Expression of Interest for Consultancy Services Photography and Videography Jobs in Kenya

COVAW is national women’s rights NGO that works towards a society free from all forms of violence against women. COVAW’s mission is ‘To champion the rights of women and girls to be free from all forms of violations.’
COVAW believes that by working through communities and building effective partnerships with duty bearers, violence against women will be addressed. COVAW is guided by its core values of integrity, dignity, courage solidarity and commitment in improving the lives of its primary beneficiaries - women and girls.
COVAW in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL) has expanded its programs to address commercial sexual exploitation of children and child trafficking in Kwale County working in 3-sub Counties: Matuga, Lunga Lunga and Msambweni.
In this project, COVAW engages with community members, civil society organisations, government (county and national) and private sector actors (formal and informal) to advocate for change towards the practices of commercial sexual exploitation of children and child trafficking in Kwale County and at national level.

About the GAA Project
Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) programme is a lobby and advocacy programme jointly implemented by 3 Netherlands based organisations, namely Plan Netherlands, Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL) and Defence for Children-ECPAT with funding from, and in partnership with, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Government under the Dialogue and Dissent - Strategic Partnerships funding framework.

The programme focuses on Four (4) Strategic Goals:
  • Increased public support for the elimination of gender based violence and economic exclusion of girls and young women;
  • Increased capacity of civil society organisations and networks to influence government and corporate/private sector actors to eliminate gender based violence and economic exclusion of girls and young women;
  • Improved policies and practices of corporate/private sector actors in support of elimination of gender based violence and economic exclusion; and,
  • Effective implementation of legislation and public policies, and improved practices of government actors in support of the prevention of gender based violence and economic exclusion.

    Purpose of the consultancy
  • In order to support GAA carry out advocacy initiatives; the program intends to conduct documentation and photography in Kwale County.
  • The documented evidence will be used to conduct initiatives aimed at advocacy targets such as policy makers and duty bearers in government, and the business/private sector.
  • The developed content will also be targeted at other key stakeholders and the public to advocate for the rights of adolescent girls and young women. 
  • To this end, COVAW wishes to engage a media consultant to document the goals and objectives, progress/results, stories of change, challenges and successes of the GAA project through a documentary video and photography. 
  • We are looking for a creative and innovative individual or firm that has an eye for gathering attractive content and telling captivating stories that empower audiences on the rights of adolescent girls and young women.

    Objective of the Assignment
  • Everyone deserves a chance; 
  • we want to tell the story of adolescent girls and young women of Kwale County, their aspirations and the challenges to realizing a better life, in a captivating manner. 
  • We want this documented in the form of a video and high-quality action photographs that will be used to support the development and delivery of effective messages towards the advocacy targets through mainstream media including radio, print and social media. 
  • In this regard, hearing directly from the beneficiaries and the community members will effectively highlight GAA thematic issues of focus and the expected impact of the project in the individual lives of girls and young women.
  • Thus, the documentary should include footage of both individual interviews and 
    community meetings.
  • The overall objective of this assignment is to produce photographs, a documentary video and a 2 pager/project fact sheet.

    Specific Tasks for Consultancy/Production Company:
  • Develop the overall concept and scenario of the documentary based on inputs from COVAW.
  • After drafting, have the concept approved by relevant COVAW staff.
  • Establish a plan and schedule to conduct interviews with key stakeholder and film clips and images of interviews/meetings with key COVAW staff. 
  • Also, accompany COVAW staff on field visits/activities and film any relevant clips and images based on the approved concept.
  • Visit the project sites and interact with beneficiaries and communities to get context.
  • Film video of interviews with selected interviewees who will include actual beneficiaries
  • Present a draft documentary for comments about contents and outlook
  • Produce a documentary video in both long version (15-20 minutes) and short version (10 minutes) with adequate background music
  • Develop a short version with Swahili subtitles
  • In addition to the documentary, capture at least 50 high quality pictures of the GAA activities/beneficiaries during the assignment
  • Develop a GAA project factsheet of 2 pages to highlight the programme to the local target groups.

    Expected Deliverables/Output
  • The main outcome of the consultants’ work is to direct, edit and produce a 10-minute documentary video on the situation of adolescent girls and young women in Kwale County and the project activities under GAA.
  • The documentary will include footage from community meetings/activities and individual interviews with girls, boys, women, men, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders. 
  • The documentary should be suitable for public screening and compatible for posting on digital media.

    Key Competencies
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the area of film/reportage/documentary writing, producing, directing and editing.
  • Extensive experience in producing development-related photographs and videos for with the aim of reaching the media, government actors, CSOs, communities and the private sector.
  • Experience in working with local and international organizations.
  • Excellent technical capacities (access to highest quality filming, light, sound and editing equipment for High Definition footage) to ensure on time and high quality production.
  • Experience in development communication will be an added advantage.
  • Local knowledge of Kwale county in particular all the project sites
  • Ability to communicate and conduct interviews in English, Swahili and local community language
  • Capacity to support further dissemination of the produced material

    The following must be included in all submissions:
  • Expression of Interest containing Technical and financial proposal, including a detailed breakdown of all estimated costs inclusive of all applicable taxes
  • Technical proposal; overall concept of the proposal, brief methodology on the approach and implementation of the assignment
  • Detailed list of equipment to be used for the assignment
  • Detailed film plan and timeline for all phases in pre-production, production and postproduction. 
  • A shooting schedule should be provided before commencing filming.
  • Detailed budget of costs
    CV of applicant and potential team members involved
  • At least two links to work samples demonstrating most relevant previous production
