COVAW is a Kenyan registered non-profit making women’s rights organization registered in 1995. COVAW seeks to promote women’s rights and works towards a society free from all forms of violence against women.
Purpose: The Access to Justice to Justice and Women’s Rights (AJWR) Program is one of COVAW’s Strategic Areas of Focus which aims to provide policy and practice direction to vulnerable and marginalised women on gender based violence issues.
It is an exciting programme which allows for influencing of related GBV policies and practices with key stakeholders in Kenya and on regional and global platforms.
The Programme generates the evidence that is critical for enhancing the voices of women and girls to speak out against all forms of violations, in private and public spaces.
COVAW is looking for suitable candidate with a strong personality, energy, conviction and passion in women’s rights; one who will guide the program in the realization of this key strategic area, with clear understanding of the linkages between access to justice for women and girls and development.
Key focus areas include Nairobi, Kiambu, Samburu, Narok, Kwale Counties with provision of additional support to other areas where COVAW works.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Oversee, support and supervise the implementation of AJWR projects,
Manage the AJWR team
Provide legal advice to COVAW programs and clients
Oversee case management and client record management for clients
Lead the capacity building processes for staff, beneficiaries, partners and stakeholders
Oversee the network of pro bono lawyers who offer services to clients
Guide the design and delivery of advocacy and communications activities and campaigns for access to justice and women’s rights
Manage the development of project work plans and monitoring tools to guide project implementation
Oversee design, development and production of relevant training and IEC materials
Maintain documentation of project activities and expenditures for internal and donor reporting and monitoring
Lead accurate and timely reporting of program activities and financial expenditure in accordance with donor rules and COVAW policy.
Participate in innovative resource mobilization and fund raising to support the program
Manage project budgets in adherence to donor and COVAW rules and policies
Represent COVAW in meetings and forums with stakeholders
Undertake full operational responsibility over COVAW's assets in use for the programme
Required qualifications and competencies
A Bachelor’s
degree in Law, and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with at least 7 years’ project management experience, preferably in the NGO Sector.
A Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Policy Studies or Development Studies will be an added advantage.
Experience in delivery of women’s rights programmes and violence against women and girls, supported by a high demonstration of related legal and policy frameworks.
Excellent advocacy and influencing skills especially on access to justice issues for women and girls;
Possess excellent analytical, writing, research and presentation skills.
Good communication and public speaking skills.
Experience in media engagement.
Ability to work with diverse people and cultures
Self-starter, able to work independently but able to consult effectively, prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Strong interpersonal and team management skills
Ability to work in the field, under pressure and to tight deadlines.
Advanced Computer Literacy skills including Excel skills.
